If you’re due to have your baby in winter, you’ll be faced with the additional challenge of having all the Newborn Winter Essentials to keep your little baby warm and safe in the harsh cold.
Babies aren’t able to regulate their temperate in the way that adults can. Therefore we have to keep them warm whilst ensuring they don’t overheat. The easiest way to do this, is to have enough items and clothing which can be layered. This helps with the regulating of their temperature as you move through different environments such going for a walk or visiting loved ones who like their homes very warm for example.
There are a bunch of newborn essentials that babies will need no matter what the weather. However, being prepared for winter with the right clothing and healthcare essentials will help massively in those first few months.
Both of my children were born in the thick of winter and I have compiled some of my favourite newborn winter essentials for you.

Clothing Newborn Winter Essentials
Long Sleeved Vests
Keep your baby extra warm by having long sleeve vests, these are great during the day and also at night.
Sleepsuit with Foldable Mittens
Many sleepsuits now come with foldable scratch mitts in the cuffs. Although they help to prevent the baby scratching their faces, it’s a good way to keep their hands warm during the night. It also means no messing about with trying to find lost scratch mitts!
A hat during the winter is pretty obvious. However, some thin cotton hats for your baby to wear at home in their first few weeks are also a good idea. Most heat is lost through the head and therefore a breathable cotton hat is the ideal way to retain heat in those cold winter days. You’ll want to invest in a warm baby hat with ear covers for while out and about too.
A snowsuit is a must for days out in the winter. You can grab some really cute ones which cover the feet, come with gloves attached and a hood.
One of my favourite baby products is a baby sleeping bag. They come in different togs for the different seasons. The great thing about these, is that no matter how much your child wiggles around in their sleep, they will remain covered and warm. I love these sleeping bags by Grobag as they are soft, the zips are quiet for those changes in the middle of the night and they wash really well. They come with a cute thermometer which has a chart detailing what your baby should wear depending on the room temperature.
Getting a pushchair footmuff for those winter months is a must. It will give your baby some extra warmth from behind and above them and keep them nice and toasty while you’re out and about.
Car seat Cover
Like the pushchair footmuffs above, you can also grab a car seat cover to keep your baby warm. Especially useful if you use the car seat on the pushchair or if you carry the car seat in and out of places.
Healthcare Newborn Winter Essentials
Being born in the winter can come along with catching coughs and colds. Being stocked up before your baby catches a cold will be a relief if you need any of these items in the middle of the night.
Being born in the winter If your baby has a cold and is bunged up a nasal aspirator can come in really handy. It’s a little device that helps to suck the snot out of the baby’s nose.
Baby paracetamol will help to bring a temperature down which can come along with any coughs or colds. Please be aware that in some cases a baby needs to be a specific age before they can have any baby paracetamol. In these current times with Covid-19, be mindful of coughs and temperatures and speak to your GP for the best plan of action. Always make sure to follow the instructions on the medicine before giving any to your baby.
A contactless thermometer like this is so easy when you have a baby who doesn’t want to stay still for a temperature check. It’s also great for taking the temp of a sleeping baby without having to disturb them. We love ours, it’s so easy to use and very accurate.
Keep up with giving your baby vitamins to ensure they are getting all the vitamins they need. This is especially true in colder months. Your GP will be able to advise on the best vitamins to suit your baby’s needs. Some vitamins are found in formula milk so a formula fed baby may need different vitamins to a breastfed baby.
During the winter, the air in homes can become very dry with the heating on. This can cause dry skin and breathing problems for babies. A humidifier can help to keep some much needed moisture in the air. There are some really cute humidifiers available, with night lights and even humidifiers with oil diffusers.
A baby’s skin is so sensitive and prone to get dry especially in the winter. Grab some infant moisturiser to keep your baby’s skin soft and moisturised over the winter months. This Aveeno cream is a favourite in my household. It smells gorgeous and is also great for kids eczema. As they grow, you can move on to other creams within the brand.
Calpol Vapour Plug
Whenever my children have colds or coughs we put on one of these Calpol Vapour Plug. They are amazing! They help your baby to breathe a little easier and therefore have a better nights sleep. The best thing about these is that when you are not using the vapour pads, you can still use the plug in as a night light. These are for outlets in the UK. If purchasing outside of the UK, check that they have the relevant electrical outlets for your country. Please note, these are not advised for babies under 3 months old. Always read the instructions before use. If these aren’t available in your country, check out a humidifier with an oil diffuser.
Along with the Calpol plug-in, I rub some Snuffle Babe Vapour Rub on their chest, back, and soles of their feet. This too helps with their breathing, providing some relief throughout the night. We have had nights where we don’t have the vapour rub or Clapol plug in and they haven’t been the best of nights. The combination have definitely helped to provide them with a better nights sleep, when they aren’t feeling 100%. Snuffle Baby Vapour Rub is not advised for babies under 3 months old. Be sure to read the instructions before use.
Having a baby in the winter comes with it’s own challenges but it’s a great time to snuggle up with cuddles at home and go for refreshing winter walks. I’ve loved having winter babies and with all the right newborn winter essentials, I’m sure you will too!
